‘Toy Story 4’ once again tops North America box office

Image
TOY STORY 4 once again outplayed the competition at the North American box office, raking in US$57.9 million in its second weekend in theaters, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday. The fourth installment in the wildly popular Disney/Pixar series has earned US$236.9 million so far in the United States and Canada, alongside another US$259 million abroad. The film again features the unmistakable voices of Tom Hanks as Woody, the ever-eager but empty-holstered cowboy doll, and Tim Allen as the impulsive Buzz Lightyear (”To infinity, and beyond!”). Far back in second place was Annabelle Comes Home , the latest in a series of horror films featuring the creepy doll, which opened at $20.4 million. In third place was another debut flick, Yesterday , a romantic comedy based on a fanciful idea: what if the Beatles never existed? A mysterious global blackout leads the world to forget the Fab Four, except for one struggling singer-songwriter who becomes an overnight sensation by...

The Sony Walkman is 40 years old

Image
SONY brought out its first Walkman, the TPS-L2, in Japan on July 1, 1979. The very first portable audiocassette player allowed its user to privately enjoy music through headphones plugged directly into the unit. This was revolutionary, and it soon won over the world. Over time, some models would offer double audiojacks, able to play both sides of a cassette tape automatically, and be able to record sound. As such, the WM-D6C and WM-DD9 models would be among the top sellers of the 1980s and are now prized by collectors. The Walkman eventually fell out of favor until it disappeared in the beginning of the 21st century, totally outpaced by the arrival MP3 players, especially the iPod. Only in 2010, however, did Sony cease production of its cassette Walkman. Since then, Sony has continued to sell its Walkman line in the form of high-fidelity players. Sony was also a pioneer in portable CD players, with a first model, the D-50, out in 1984. Known as the Discman, it didn’t have the same ...

Predators on the prowl

Image
THERE’S a new Predator in town – and it’s ready to take a big bite out of its competitors. This alpha from Acer’s gaming hardware brand is the Predator Triton 900. The 9th Gen Intel Core i7-powered laptop boasts an Nvidia GeForce RTX0280 graphics 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD, and to cool it all, the latest 4th Gen Aeroblade 3D technology. In short, it’s a cutting-edge gaming laptop that can be pushed past its limits thanks to the advanced active cooling system. But that’s not all. What really makes the Predator Triton 900 stand out is its unique tiltable 17.3in display, its right-handed touchpad that doubles as a number pad, and a turbo key that lets users boost the laptop’s performance. That said, don’t even dream of owning a Predator Triton 900 – which is available now – if you don’t have RM15,999 to spare. The price also comes with a two-year local on-site plus accidental damage and theft warranty. Other new entries in the Predator series include the beastly Predator Orion 5000 (R...

Taking a bite out of Apple

Image
SWITCHING to an iPhone can be a daunting prospect for a long-time Android user. Where does one begin? Should I pick a discounted older model, or the latest and the greatest? As the available selection of iPhones pales in comparison to the plethora of Android phones out there, picking out a model is not that difficult. When I first take out the new blue iPhone XR from out of its box, it glistens like a gem. It looks small compared to the giants I have been used to but surprisingly, at the same time, more substantial in feel. I hold the power button, it comes alive, and I begin the initial setup. When the iPhone boots up and is fully configured, I stare at the interface that countless cheap Chinese Android phone makers had copied in the past. There are no app drawers, and no easy way to sort the apps. It makes the home screen look messy. But that is the least of my issues. In the first week of using the iPhone as my primary device, I began to miss my Android phone. I reluctantly ...

Left out in the cold

Image
AMERICAN singer Maggie Lindemann’s latest single Friends Go throws shade at friends who forget you exist once they get into a relationship. The song spins a story from the ‘third wheel concept’, something the 20-year-old says is an all-too-familiar situation that happens to practically everyone. “As a result, you kind of lose your friends and people just get distant,” said the Los Angeles-based singer during an interview before she was due to take the stage at The Bee, Publika, on June 21. Speaking under the glow of purple neon lights, Lindemann said: “I feel like I know so many people who, when they get into a relationship, they kind of box themselves off from everyone else. They’re just so occupied all the time with that (new) person.” Still, when the tables are turned, the singer admitted that it’s the same thing for her. “Sometimes, when I get into relationships, I tend to just want to hang out with [the persons involved] and only them, so that was the meaning behind [the so...

Brain disease found in Australian rugby league players

Image
POST-MORTEM examinations have found a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated blows to the head in two elite Australian rugby league players, the first cases found in the sport, researchers said Thursday. The researchers said the players both had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which has been widely diagnosed among former US National Football League (NFL) players but is little studied elsewhere. The Sydney-based study said the condition, once known as ‘punch drunk syndrome’ occurred when repeated brain trauma led to a long-term decline in cognitive function. They said the two unnamed subjects were both middle-aged former professionals who had played more than 150 National Rugby League (NRL) games each. The study said there were no other known cases of CTE among rugby league players and there had only been one reported previously involving an Australian athlete, who played the closely related code of rugby union. It said they were the only cases of CTE the neuropath...

Cuba to legalize independent film-makers

Image
CUBA is to allow independent film-makers to legally produce their own movies as of August, giving a major boost to directors and producers who have long operated in a legal grey area. A decree published by the one-party Communist state on Thursday said that as of August 23, a new law will “approve the figure of the audiovisual and cinematographic creator as an independent artist.” It said the legalization of independent film-makers would “guarantee the quality of production and take advantage of the resources that the country uses in the development of these activities.” Ramon Samada, the director of the Cuban Cinema Institute, said in an interview with the official newspaper Granma that independent movie-makers would have “broad capabilities for the development of their work, such as the capacity to contract and be contracted, to operate bank accounts and interact with any legal Cuban or foreign person.” He said the move would include the creation of a cinema fund to back the pr...

LGBTQ representation on TV ticking up, but barriers remain

Image
Back in the era of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, the LGBTQ community was practically non-existent on the small screen. And even if obstacles remain, significant strides have been made since then, especially in the past two decades. In past fictional series gay characters were often ridiculed or caricatured, and sometimes portrayed as deviant or dangerous. The 1967 television documentary “The Homosexuals” lays bare how television treated the community, says Robert Thompson, a media scholar at Syracuse University. “Essentially it was still treating the idea of homosexuality as a disorder, that it was something that gone wrong,“ he said. The “Television Code” — a set of moral standards introduced to American TV in 1952 — implicitly prohibited any reference to homosexuality in a positive light, an injunction that was abolished only in 1983. The taboo also existed behind the camera. “When I came to Los Angeles to write, you could not be an out writer on a staff. It just wasn’t done,“ s...

Movie review: Yesterday

Image
UNDOUBTEDLY one of the funniest and most satisfying movies to come out in a long time, Yesterday is both a love letter to The Beatles and also a slap to the face for the current music scene. The story revolves around Jack Malik (Himesh Patel), a struggling singer-songwriter who is on the verge of giving up his music dreams entirely, until he gets hit by a bus while being distracted by a strange electrical surge that hits his town. After spending some time in hospital (minus a couple of teeth), Jack finds out that he is the only person who remembers The Beatles. He uses this to his advantage by performing the band’s songs as his own, stunning audiences with his ‘talent’. As Jack tries to remember as many Beatles songs as he can (for some reason the lyrics to Eleanor Rigby elude him), he gets help from school chum and manager Ellie (Lily James). Things really take off when singer Ed Sheeran (playing himself) tracks him down and offers him the chance to be his opening act for a c...

Double Compound Movements

Image
Double compound movements can be combined to create a fast and extremely powerful training effect. The ’70s and ’80s saw the birth of the globo-gym era and with it a limited, narrow conception of what training looked like. Most people who exercised chose either bodybuilding or “aerobics.”   Despite all the headbands and flashy colors, aerobics was not much different than a lot of the popular weight loss programs of the modern world. The basic concept was to move a lot and you’d lose weight . It works. There doesn’t need to be a lot of rhyme or reason. More movement tends to have that effect.   read more from Breaking Muscle https://ift.tt/31VC6uC
