Movie review: The Addams Family

Image
NOTHING describes the Addams Family better than their theme song. They are creepy, and they are kooky, some say mysterious and spooky. As for the movie, I have mixed feelings about it. Right from the start, The Addams Family feels more like a theatrical pilot to an animated TV series rather than a movie. It has a plot that doesn’t really go anywhere, simple character designs, and a cast that can easily be replaced. The film begins abruptly with the wedding of Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia Addams (Charlize Theron), and it briskly progresses to the founding of the Addams Family mansion. Two kids and several years later, the real story begins. If it not for the credits at the beginning of the movie, I would not have guessed that there was star power behind the cartoony facade. Having Snoop Dogg voice Cousin Itt is fun and novel, but no one would have known if the fact was not explicitly stated. It also feels like the movie studio is trying to hold on to the intellectual property...

Movie review: Zombieland: Double Tap

Image
WHEN Zombieland came out in 2009, is was one of those rare critical and commercial hits that combined comedy, adventure and some horror (courtesy of the zombies). Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) have become a family of sorts, and have moved into the White House. Columbus and Wichita are a couple, and Little Rock wants to find her own soulmate. When Columbus proposes to Wichita, she gets cold feet and takes off with Little Rock. Not soon after, Columbus hooks up with ditsy blonde Madison (Zoey Deutch), whom he meets at an abandoned mall. Wichita returns after Little Rock takes off with a cute hippie called Berkeley (Avan Joglia). The gang then hits the road (with Madison in tow) to look for Little Rock. The journey is filled with hilarious bickering, encounters with interesting characters, and zombies that are harder to kill than those they’ve encountered in the past. The movie is just a little ove...

Morning Sickness Can Be Beneficial

“Since the beginning of time, pregnant women have been reported to suffer from a syndrome variously known as morning sickness, pregnancy sickness, or nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.” The term “morning sickness” is actually misleading, as women can feel sick all day long. Sometimes, it can get so serious that women have to be hospitalized. Researchers at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that saturated fat seemed to be a primary dietary risk factor for severe sickness, with five times the odds for every 15 grams intake of saturated fat, “equivalent to one quarter-pound cheeseburger.” The reason saturated fat intake may be such a strong risk factor could be through its effects on estrogen, as “[s]aturated fat has been shown to increase circulating levels of estrogen.” Why would we evolve to have such a negative reaction to saturated fat? Why would we evolve to get sick at all? As I discuss in my video Morning Sickness May Protect Mother and Child , “[p]regnancy sickn...

Book review: The Hunt

Image
THIS third book in Bear Grylls’ Will Jaegar series starts with a scene in Austria in 1945 just as the war is ending in defeat for the Germans, and SS General Hans Kammler must oversee the blowing up of one side of a mountain. In truth, this is merely a cover for his own plan to hide uranium in the mountain. He hopes that this hidden stash can be later used to establish a Fourth Reich. Kammler is captured by the allies, but instead of being imprisoned, he is recruited into working for the Americans after the war. The story then shifts to the present day, and Will Jaeger, who is staying in Austria, learns that old Nazi tunnels have been discovered in nearby mountains. Out of interest, he goes to investigate and is horrified to find a number of bodies there – not old skeletons, but new ones that have recently been shot. And he also uncovers evidence that a hoard of uranium has been stolen from an old Nazi bunker in the mountains. It soon becomes clear that the entire operation wa...

Book review: Cilka’s Journey

Image
THOUGH Cilka’s Journey (Zaffre Publication) is a sequel of sorts to author Heather Morris’ celebrated debut novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz , it can also be read as a standalone. The story is harrowing, poignant and, sometimes, heartwarming. Cilka Kelin was first introduced by Lale Sokolov, the titular character in The Tattooist , as “the bravest person I ever met” when he met the girl at the dreaded Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp. Basing her story on research and interviews with survivors of the Siberian gulags, Morris has written a vivid account of how a beautiful, young woman ended up in the concentration camp at age 16 and was forced to become a Nazi officer’s mistress in order to survive. When the camp was liberated by the Soviet army, Chilka was accused of being a Nazi collaborator and sent to a prison in Siberia. There, she tried to help her fellow inmates while having to put up with the resentment of others. Once again, Cilka found herself going through the sam...

How to Increase Gut Bacterial Richness

We live in an “obesogenic environment,” with cheap junk food everywhere, thanks in part to subsidies going to the “‘food industrial complex,’ which manufactures obesogenic foods that foster addiction…The root causes…[may] make obesity difficult to escape,” but a lot of people do. If it were simply the external environment, why isn’t everyone obese? “Some individuals seem to be more susceptible to the obesogenic environment…than others,” which suggests a genetic component, supported by studies of twins and adopted kids, but the genes that have been identified so far account for only 6 to 11 percent of the genetic variation in body mass index between individuals. Perhaps variation in our “other genome”—that is, all the different microbes that inhabit our body, known as the microbiome—may be playing a role. We have a hundred times more bacterial genes inside us than human genes. As I discuss in my video Gut Microbiome: Strike It Rich with Whole Grains , a study found that people te...

Getting the Most Out of Seated Cable Cuff Tricep Extensions

Image
A unique advantage of this exercise over other triceps extension variations is the use of cuffs rather than a hand-held attachment. A key benefit of the seated cable cuff tricep extension exercise is the stability it provides. Because you have a bench for support, you can keep your shoulder blades locked down. This helps prevent your shoulders from shifting and means you can focus purely on directing tension through the triceps.   Using a cable has the advantage of providing a fairly constant tension throughout the rep meaning it challenges the entire range of motion well.   read more from Breaking Muscle https://ift.tt/2p9w4bw
