Hollywood red carpets go green

Image
FROM glitzy all-vegan galas to recycled red carpet outfits, Hollywood has stepped up efforts to reduce its carbon footprint this awards season, which will soon wrap up with the Oscars. But while some scientists have welcomed A-listers’ renewed zeal on climate change, others have questioned whether Tinseltown’s jet-set elite are any sort of example to follow. The Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards galas this month all served plant-based menus, instead of the steak dinners typical of celebrity-packed events. Oscar nominees were offered roasted maitake mushrooms and vegan cheese at their annual luncheon this week, and will be served a “70 percent plant-based” menu at the February 9 show. The “brave and compassionate” moves have drawn glowing praise from actor Joaquin Phoenix, who said it was the first time he’d ever eaten at the Globes, as well as environmental actor-activist stalwarts Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. Inside the star-studded events, fe...

Nintendo says no new Switch

Image
JAPANESE gaming giant Nintendo said Friday there would be no fresh model of its hot-selling Switch console this year, dashing the hopes of fans eager for a new version. “We have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model in 2020,“ president Shuntaro Furukawa told a briefing in Tokyo. Competition in the industry is expected to grow tougher this year as Sony prepares to launch its next-generation PlayStation 5 for the Christmas season, and with upcoming 5G mobile phones expected to offer more sophisticated gaming. But Furukawa said the Switch’s life cycles and customer bases were different from rival consoles. “Other companies’ business moves will not have a special impact on our business,“ he said. The original Switch console, a hybrid that can be used for handheld play or hooked up to a screen at home, has become a huge global seller. It is entering its fourth year, which Furukawa described as the “early stage of its middle life.” But its sales are still solid with powerfu...

Map app challenge

Image
APPLE on Jan 30 said it has finished rolling out an overhauled map app in the US in another attempt to challenge Google’s popular smartphone navigation software. Apple spent years rebuilding the application, its cars traveling millions of miles to map roads, after a version launched in 2012 was so problematic it prompted a rare public apology from chief executive Tim Cook. Mapping programs on mobile devices is seen as a way to stay in tune with smartphone lifestyles and pursue opportunities to make money connecting people with nearby offerings such as restaurants, theaters, clothing shops and other businesses. Apple said the redesigned “Maps” program is fast, accurate, and comprehensive, even weaving in transit options in some locations. Maps is to begin rolling out in Europe in coming months. “We set out to create the best and most private maps app on the planet that is reflective of how people explore the world today,“ Apple senior vice president of internet software and servi...

Lopez and Shakira planning special Super Bowl message

Image
KOBE Bryant’s death in a helicopter crash has reminded everyone how fragile life is, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira said on Jan 30, and the pop superstars plan to use their Super Bowl halftime show to convey that message. “Life is so fragile and that is why we have to try and live every moment as intensely as we can,” Shakira told a packed news conference. “We will be celebrating life, celebrating diversity in this country. “I am sure he (Bryant) will be very proud to see the message we are going to try to convey on stage because I think it is a very big moment for our community, the Latino community in this country.” Stopping short of saying they were planning a direct tribute to Bryant, the 18-times NBA All-Star who was killed in the crash along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others on Sunday, Lopez and Shakira promised a fun, power-packed 12-minute show but wanted to make a point. “I think this is just affecting everybody so much because it is reminding us, again, ...

Italy to let passengers off cruise ship after virus scare

Image
THOUSANDS of stranded tourists were free to disembark from a cruise ship at an Italian port after authorities said two Chinese passengers feared to have the coronavirus tested negative Thursday. Italy’s institute for infectious diseases examined samples taken from a Chinese woman ill with a fever, as well as her travelling companion, and both were negative for coronavirus, the health ministry said. It was not immediately clear whether passengers, who had been stranded for 12 hours, would disembark from the Costa Smeralda cruise ship on Thursday or Friday. Some 1,000 new passengers were due to board the ship in Civitavecchia and 1,400 were due to permanently disembark. The news came as the UN health agency declared an international emergency over the deadly coronavirus from China, which reported its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus deaths. Costa Cruises said a 54-year old woman from Macau “was placed in solitary confinement in the on-board hospital last night with her trave...

Berlinale award withdrawn over laureate’s Nazi past

Image
ORGANISERS of the Berlinale film festival have withdrawn its prestigious Alfred-Bauer prize after revelations that Bauer, its founding director, was a high-ranking Nazi. An investigation by Die Zeit daily highlighted Bauer’s standing in the Nazi party, the organisers said on their Facebook page ahead of the festival, which starts on Feb 20. The organisers referred to a report published Wednesday in Die Zeit newspaper “which cast new light on the role of Alfred Bauer, the first director of the Berlin International Film Festival, in the film politics of the National Socialists. “The interpretation of these sources suggests that he had held significant positions during the Nazi era. In view of these new findings, the Berlinale will suspend the ‘Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize’ with immediate effect,“ the organisers said. They added that “we welcome the research and its publication... and will seize the opportunity to begin a deeper research on the festival history with the support of...

Can virtual assistants help manage addictions?

Image
A TEAM of American doctors has highlighted the key role that virtual assistants could play in helping to prevent addiction. The researchers suggest, for example, that they could instruct smartphone users to avail of free treatment referral services. Smartphone virtual assistants like Alexa, Siri and Bixby are handy when you want to consult tomorrow’s weather forecast, find the nearest open pharmacy or access a list of movie times. But can they help you stop smoking and drinking? This is the question that a group of medical professors at the University of California, San Diego, decided to explore. “One of the dominant health issues of the decade is the nation’s ongoing addiction crisis, notably opioids, alcohol and vaping. As a result, it is an ideal case study to begin exploring the ability of intelligent virtual assistants to provide actionable answers for obvious health questions,“ explains Dr. John Ayers, the co-author of the study. The team of doctors conducted a test in whic...

Christine Sun Kim to sign US National Anthem

Image
AMERICAN artist, Christine Sun Kim, known for distilling sounds and spoken language in her work, will perform the National Anthem alongside pop star Demi Lovato during football’s biggest night. Lovato will sing The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of the much-awaited face-off between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Meanwhile, Kim will deliver her own rendition of the National Anthem in American Sign Language (ASL) from nearby on stage, with the artist hoping that her performance will sensibilize millions of homes watching the Super Bowl LIV to sign language. “Representation matters a great deal to me, and I hope that seeing a Deaf person signing the anthem will bring attention to various issues that plague our community: language-deprived deaf babies, police brutality towards disabled people, a lack of mental health services, and many others,“ the artist recently told artnet News. While the National Association of the Deaf and the NFL have collaborated on featuring...

UNICODE Consortium, the organization behind your favorite emojis, announced this week that 117 new inclusive and gender-neutral emojis have been approved for 2020. Among the new icons is a polar bear, the transgender flag, gender ambiguous brides and grooms. It’s already that time of year again, the time when the digital world is introduced to a new collection of emojis destined to make it to their devices in the fall. This year, Unicode Consortium created a total of 117 new sample icons which companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google can use as a basis for their own renditions of the characters. Billie Eilish to give ‘special performance’ at Oscars

Image
NEWLY minted Grammy winner Billie Eilish will perform live at the Oscars ceremony next month, organizers said on Jan 29, raising speculation she may debut her recording of the new James Bond movie theme song. Eilish, 18, swept the Grammy Awards on Jan 26 by taking the four top prizes–album, record, song of the year and best new artist. She was only the second musician ever to win all four Grammys on the same night. Eilish and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on their social media feeds, but said only that she would “take to the Oscars stage for a special performance.” The Los Angeles teen is not included in the roster of stars who will be performing music nominated in the best original song category, including Elton John, Idina Menzel, Cynthia Erivo, Randy Newman and This is Us actress Chrissy Metz. It was announced earlier this month, however, that the Bad Guy singer had co-written and would record the theme song for the upcoming Bond movie...

Robbie hints at more female action movies

Image
AUSTRALIAN actress Margot Robbie hinted that her new female-led action film Birds of Prey could be the first in a series of movies as she reprised the role of comic antihero Harley Quinn in what she has called a passion project. Robbie, 29, who has been nominated this year for two BAFTAs and an Oscar, was on the red carpet for the world premiere of B irds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn , to give it its full name, in London on Jan 29. Having pitched the idea of a female-led superhero action movie to Warner Bros, Robbie also produced it, bringing Harley Quinn, a character from the Batman stories created by DC Comics, to center stage. Asked if Birds of Prey was the first in a series of outings for Quinn and the other female characters, amongst them Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Robbie did not rule it out. “I, of course, have big wishes for many things we could do in the DC (DC Comics) universe, but no, n...

Showbiz apes find peace through painting

Image
ONE OF them worked alongside Clint Eastwood, others acted in the remake of sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes , while yet another was the darling favorite of Michael Jackson. They are the 53 chimpanzees and orangutans who live in a unique sanctuary in central Florida. All of these great apes were raised by humans and lack the basic survival skills to ever live in the wild. They do not know how to gather food, and the mothers would be incapable of caring for their offspring. For that reason, they had no other place to go when Hollywood or scientific research labs had no more use for them, or when they grew too big and powerful for their celebrity owners to continue caring for them. The lucky ones make the final journey to this oasis, officially known as the Center for Great Apes (CGA) in Florida, in the southeastern US. It is the only accredited orangutan sanctuary in the western hemisphere and one of only nine chimp sanctuaries in North America. One of the more recent arrivals is...

Papua New Guinea bans travellers from all ‘Asian ports’

Image
PAPUA New Guinea shut air and seaports to all foreign travellers coming from Asia on Jan 29, in a desperate bid to prevent the deadly coronavirus from reaching the impoverished Melanesian nation. In a note to airlines and boat operators, the ministry of immigration said “all citizens originating from the Asian ports will be refused entry to the country effective today”. The ministry also announced that Papua New Guinea’s only official land border – with Indonesian-controlled Papua province – would be shut from Thursday. No cases of coronavirus have been reported in Papua New Guinea, but the country’s health service is already buckling under the weight of underfunding and rampant public health problems. Papua New Guinea is one of only a handful of countries where polio is still endemic, leaving doctors and the United Nations scrambling to revive long-lapsed vaccination programmes. Papua New Guinea residents returning from Asian countries will be held in quarantine for 14 days. I...

The tin house

Image
Five years ago, Zaizul Azari Mohammad Mahayudin and Hamizah Baharuddin bought a piece of land in the Klang Valley. The couple wanted to build a house with a Scandinavian design that included white walls and wooden floors. Unfortunately, the cost of building their dream home proved to be a little pricey. Undeterred, they turned to the internet to search for new house concepts that would fit their tight budget. “The last thing we wanted was for our land to remain bare,” says 37-year-old Zaizul, a full-time teacher and part-time photographer. Last year the couple, who have been married for ten years, managed to make their dream home a reality – after being inspired by the idea of converting a shipping container into a home. “Shipping container homes were certainly more affordable,” Zaizul says. Two shipping containers were bought and delivered to the location, and placed one on the top of the other, and the couple immediately began renovations. Including the land, the cost of the d...
