A crazy real-life ‘game’ comes to TV

Image
IS IT a giant game for adults organized by a secretive company, or something far bigger? That is the premise of Dispatches from Elsewhere , a new series from US cable network AMC that is inspired by a true story. Once a classic movie channel, AMC thrived when it shifted its focus to original programming– it is the home of Mad Men , Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead . Now, it wants to make sure that it remains relevant in a scripted content landscape that has expanded exponentially in recent years. Like others in the field, AMC is taking a risk on a once-unlikely TV project that will require viewers to invest time and energy to decipher it. So far, Dispatches , which debuts on March 1, is 10 episodes long. “The whole landscape changed,“ says Mark Friedman, the showrunner for “Dispatches,“ which stars Oscar winner Sally Field, Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant and Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000 from the hip-hop duo Outkast). “You couldn’t have done a show like this 10 years ago, but no...

Tokyo Disney closing for two weeks

Image
THE operator of Tokyo's two Disney resorts, Disneyland and DisneySea, said On Feb 28 the parks would be closed for around two weeks on fears over the outbreak of the new coronavirus. "Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea have decided to proceed with an extraordinary closure from Saturday February 29, 2020, through Sunday March 15" after the government urged measures to limit the spread of the virus, the operator said in a statement. The operator Oriental Land said it currently hoped to resume operations from March 16. "Currently, we plan to reopen on March 16. But we'll decide when to open by looking at the situation and developments. We'll also consult (official) agencies concerned," a spokesman told AFP. More than 30 million visitors flood into the two parks per year, and they are among the most popular destinations for tourists coming to Tokyo. The move comes as the Japanese government steps up measures to tackle the outbreak of the virus, whic...

Virus to cost world tourism at least US$22billion

Image
THE deadly coronavirus epidemic will cost world tourism at least US$22 billion owing to a drop in spending by Chinese tourists, the head of the World Travel and Tourism Council said Thursday. The COVID-19 epidemic has killed more than 2,760 people, mostly in China -- where it first emerged in December -- and infected more than 81,000 in over 45 countries. “It is too soon to know but the WTTC has made a preliminary calculation in collaboration with (research firm) Oxford Economics which estimates that the crisis will cost the sector at least US$22 billion,“ Gloria Guevara told El Mundo daily. “This calculation is based on the experience of previous crises, such as SARS or H1N1, and is based on losses deriving from Chinese tourists who have not been travelling in recent weeks,“ she said. “The Chinese are the tourists who spend most when they travel.” The loss figure, which equates to about 20.2 billion euros, is the most optimistic scenario envisaged by the study which was publish...

Movie review: Fantasy Island

Image
THE film opens with a woman screaming and running for help, an obvious clue as to what is about to come. The story begins with five people travelling to Fantasy Island after winning a contest to have their fantasies fulfilled. At the resort, their host Mr. Roarke (Michael Pena) welcomes the lucky winners, and explains that they must live out their fantasies to their “natural conclusion”. Each guest has his or her own fantasy. For instance, Melanie Cole’s (Lucy Hale) fantasy is to torture her school bully – the woman who was kidnapped in the opening scene. At first, all seems well. As suspected, it is all too good to be true. One by one, each of their fantasies falls apart. Soon, all five guests realise that this is not what they signed up for. It turns out that they are actually living out the revenge fantasy of another person. But who? That is the mystery. The answer will surprise you. The beautiful Maggie Q plays her part well, while Hale keeps you intrigued. Jimmy O. Yang, ...

Supplement Labeling Fraud is Widespread

The regulation of dietary supplements in the United States has been described as “too little, too late.” “Dietary supplements may be adulterated with dangerous compounds, be contaminated, fail to contain the purported active ingredient, or contain unknown doses of the ingredients stated on the label; be sold at toxic dosages; or produce harmful effects” in other ways. As I discuss in my video Black Raspberry Supplements Put to the Test , “[i]f the composition and quality of ingredients cannot be reliably ensured , the validity of research on dietary supplements is questionable. Moreover, the health of the US public is put at risk.” A private, third-party company that has independently tested thousands of supplements “identifies approximately 1 in 4 with a quality problem” because it either does not contain what it says it contains, is “of substandard quality,” or is contaminated in some way. Let’s look at an example. I’ve produced a few videos on the remarkable properties of black ...

Children who feel connected to nature are happier

Image
NEW Mexican research has found that feeling connected to nature appears to boost a child’s happiness and increase the likelihood that they engage in eco-friendly behaviors. Led by the Sonora Institute of Technology (ITSON), the new study recruited 296 children aged 9 to 12 from a city in northwestern Mexico. Each child was asked to say how much they agreed with statements about their connectedness to nature, such as “Humans are part of the natural world” and statements about their sustainable behaviors– including pro-ecological, frugal, altruistic and equitable behaviors–such as “I separate empty bottles to recycle.” The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, showed that there was a significant relationship between feeling connected to nature and performing sustainable behaviors. Moreover, this also appeared to impact a child’s happiness, with children who reported feeling more connected to nature also reporting higher levels of perceived happiness. The rese...

Macabre Venice parade marks plague

Image
CLOACKED in black with their faces hidden by bone-white masks of plague doctors or the dead, Venetians marked a historical scourge in an annual procession held under the shadow of the new coronavirus outbreak. The macabre march, which commemorates the plague that ravaged the city over four centuries ago, went ahead late Tuesday despite a decision to cancel other Venice carnival events as Italy battles the virus. Italy, which has reported 12 deaths in Europe’s worst outbreak of the virus, has attempted to lockdown the epicentre in the north to contain its spread, while cultural and sporting events have been cancelled or disrupted. Disguised as monks, doctors, prisoners, beggars and the ill, dozens marched in procession around the Piazza San Marco as evening fell on Tuesday, some with lanterns in their hands. Many wore the plague doctor mask with its long nose, which the physicians wore stuffed with medicinal herbs to protect themselves while treating those afflicted with the plagu...
