Living the American dream

NEWS broke that Malaysian fashion designer Jasmine Chong was set to compete in the Amazon Prime Video reality series, Making the Cut , hosted by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. Chong and 11 other fashion designers will be judged before a panel of industry experts including Naomi Campbell, Carine Roitfeld, Joseph Altuzzara, Chiara Ferragni and Nicole Richie. Just this February, Chong presented her most recent Autumn/Winter 2020 collection Celestia during New York Fashion Week (NYFW). In the collection, she found a sense of ethereal beauty in the gilded halls of the Palace of Versailles in France. And in that beauty, there were flaws in humanity; where she felt insignificant and ordinary among the grandeur of dramatic Baroque decor and lavish Rococo frescoes. The collection mirrors the movements between a lofty world that’s not of her own, and embraces beauty in imperfection with sheer chiffon and silk organza weighed down by flocked velvet and heavy jacquards, and menswear silk shirting ...

I N 2012 , Chrystina Ng joined 8TV as a TV host and was a supporting celebrity for World Vision’s project visit to Sabah for a special TV programme. There, she was introduced to a whole new sector of humanitarian relief work, focusing on improving human welfare in rural communities. Today, Ng continues to render humanitarian assistance and is more passionate than ever to bring attention to suffering communities. Sitting down with theSun in a secluded but cosy room in Media Prima, Ng shared her moving stories and experiences, as well as her efforts to help alleviate the suffering faced by children and communities in the country and worldwide. What does being a humanitarian essentially mean? “It shouldn’t just be about initiating passion projects and campaigns or doing charity, but we need to help improve the welfare of others who are less fortunate, through uplifting human values and championing basic rights. “The topic of ‘humanitarian work’ stretches beyond [alleviating] pover...

Book Review: Safe Houses

Image
IN THIS spy thriller, author Dan Fesperman tells the story based on two different eras – the present day and that of the Cold War in Berlin in the 70s. It all started in August 2014, 35 years after Berlin-based CIA worker Helen Abell went rogue to uncover a serial rapist, where she and her husband are shot in their Maryland farmhouse by their son, Willard. Initially, it is assumed that Willard, 24, who is mentally ill, committed the crime. But older sister, Anna, who feels he is incapable of such an act, decides to hire Henry Mattick, an investigator, to help uncover the truth. In the process, she is shocked to discover that her secretive mum was once a spy in Europe and may have been targeted in connection with her activities there. The book continues with alternating sections following Anna in the present and Helen in the past. In Berlin, the innocent but strong-willed Helen, who was 23 then, has the job of tending to four safe houses for the Company. During an impromptu middle...

Book Review: My Sister, the Serial Killer

Image
THIS prize-winning novel from Oyinkan Braithwaite is a dark comedy that begins with Korede helping her younger sister Ayoola dispose of a body. Ayoola, as we find out during their conversation, has a thing for killing off boyfriends who are abusive and this isn’t the first time that Korede has cleaned up after her. Korede is the responsible older sister who works as a nurse in a local hospital. Korede has long hoped that Dr Tade whom she works with will eventually notice her as more than a capable colleague. However when Tade asks for Ayoola’s contact number, things get complicated. Not only is Korede worried for Tade, but she also starts feeling inferior being compared to the prettier Ayoola. To add to the complicated mix, the cops start investigating the disappearance of Ayoola’s last boyfriend (after a witness comes forward) and Korede is forced to put aside petty rivalries to save her sister. Braithwaite’s writing style is simple and to the point, making this book very easy...

The smartphone conundrum

Image
Have you ever felt disenchanted with smartphones? There seems to be a new one every other week, each claiming they are the best, and often with some novel but impractical gimmick. This year alone, we have seen smartphone cameras with zoom factor and megapixels in the three digits range, and those that fold. To cut through the glamour, we asked our colleagues at the photodesk what they look for in a smartphone, especially when it comes to cameras and everyday practical use, of course. Photographers at theSun use smartphones for work (in addition to their full-sized cameras) and play. More than anyone, they push their devices to the limit. Their attitude towards technology is often “what can it do for me” instead of “how do I work within its limits”. Unanimously the photographers agree that it is easier to be incognito with a smartphone rather than the full DSLR set with lenses. “They just make life easier,” said Amirul Syafiq, who is also a videographer. “Especially for photojo...

Keto Bacon Ranch Chicken Casserole

Image
It’s a common misconception that casseroles are off the table once you shift to a Primal lifestyle or start a keto diet. After all, the casseroles you grew up with were likely packed with noodles or rice, had very little vegetable, and were almost universally held together by a can of condensed soup. With a few ingredient swaps, casseroles are back, and just as cozy as ever. This Keto Bacon Ranch Chicken Casserole recipe has the creamy, dreamy consistency you know and love, without the digestive upset that comes with a heavy, cheesy casserole. Plus, everyone loves the convenience of a one-pan meal – less cooking and clean up time! Instead of using cream-of-whatever soup, you’ll create the velvety effect by combining dairy-free ranch dressing with a cashew sauce so good that it stands on its own as an addictive vegetable dip. (Do yourself a favor – make a little extra cashew sauce.) The nutritional yeast is optional, but can give your keto chicken casserole a “cheesier” flavor if tha...
