7 Ways to Change Negative Self-Talk

Image
Let me be the first to tell you that there’s nothing wrong with you. You may have some patterns to unlearn, some self-love to embrace, and some new behaviors to embody, but seriously, there’s nothing wrong with you. If you want to change your negative self-talk, you’ve got to first understand where it comes from. There’s a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi, that, in a nutshell says, “Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. And your words become your actions.” So if your actions include binging on sourdough (again), rolling your eyes at your rolls and wrinkles, or subconsciously sabotaging your sleep cycle, you can go ahead and thank your belief system for that. You can also take comfort in knowing you’re not alone. On any given week I’ll hear my clients say that making a protein rich breakfast takes too much effort. Or that they’re too busy to work out. Or they can’t stop eating desserts. These are all beliefs. And, as we’ll be breaking down here in a second...

Contaminants Found in 90% of Herbal Supplements Tested

The majority of dietary supplement facilities tested were found noncompliant with good manufacturing practices guidelines. “The U.S. public is not well protected ” by current dietary supplement recommendations, an issue I explore in my video Dangers of Dietary Supplement Deregulation . Sometimes, there is too little of whatever’s supposed to be in the bottle, and other times, there’s too much, as I discussed in my video Black Raspberry Supplements Put to the Test . In one case, as you can see at 0:20 in my video , hundreds of people suffered from acute selenium toxicity, thanks to an “employee error at one of the ingredient suppliers.” Months later, many continued to suffer. Had the company been following good manufacturing practices, such as testing their ingredients, this may not have happened. In 2007, the FDA urged companies to adhere to such guidelines, but seven years later, the majority of dietary supplement facilities remained noncompliant with current good ...

What is your WFH routine like? “I believe that having a routine is very important when you’re working from home because you can be easily distracted, or lose focus. For me, it’s starting the day the same way I would any other working day, and then sticking to the same routine that I normally would if I were in the office.” How does it differ from working in the office? “The main differences are the usual face-to-face meetings with my team and the store visits. Now with the technology we have and in the face of a digital transformation, we have access to applications that have allowed us to have virtual meetings online. “We are glad to have partnered with delivery aggregators very early on. I AM going to admit that prior to the release of Universal Music’s collaborative track Jangan Keluar , I had no idea who Yonniboii was. This 22-year-old singer, songwriter and producer not only composed Jangan Keluar but was one of the 17 artistes featured on it. The song, which bluntly told listeners to stay indoors during the movement control order (MCO), was also extremely catchy and memorable. Born Muhammad Haqeem Nuriman Nor Azrin, Yonniboii is in fact the monicker he used when he played League of Legends. He studied animation, but eventually turned to his true passion – music. He is currently working on his debut album, which will be out at the end of the year. During an interview with theSun , Yonniboii spoke about his journey to becoming a musician. How did it begin for you? “I always wanted to do music, but my mum and dad were hyped about it. My dad was in graphics and did animation, so my mum and dad decided that I should be in graphic design and become an animator, ...

Cooking made easy

SHOWS that made Sherson Lian a household name over the past decade, such as 5 Rencah 5 Rasa , are currently on repeat, which is great for the many new home cooks who are trying new things using locally sourced ingredients. “I am grateful because stuff that I have done in the past is being appreciated all over again. It reminds me of where I come from. Looking at the old stuff, I sometimes cringe at how I look and how I spoke,” said Lian during our telephone interview. Nonetheless, he said it makes him feel good watching these shows again. However if he was offered a chance to revisit certain episodes and re-do them (the way Alton Brown is revisiting his old Good Eats episodes with a Good Eats Reloaded ), Lian would definitely jump at the opportunity. “With a more mature and experienced me doing this, why not?” Right now, many people who have never cooked before are picking up cooking tips and recipes, and trying their hand at preparing their own meals at home. Lian’s fuss-free ...

What is your WFH routine like? “My routine for WFH has been hectic in developing content for our upcoming film projects. During the day for around twice a week, it involves virtual production meetings with the team and clients. “In short, WFH has been very fruitful in [terms of] film production work, but sadly there is not much painting done, as [I am short on materials] and the art shops are all closed. A passion for clay

Image
EVERY handmade piece is unique and every potter or ceramic artist has a distinctive style in expressing their creativity, which brings us to a local potter, an artistic and inventive Cindy Koh, whose fascination for coffee and clay led to creating her unique coffee brewers. Koh also creates modern, custom-designed ceramic plates, cups, bowls, vases, among others, using different forms or techniques – glazed or painted with natural or bold colours. It is literally art on a plate and stands out or blends in with the contemporary interior design of any kitchen or dinner table. Mass-produced ceramic has long been replaced with one-of-a-kind pieces, which adds class and are aesthetically beautiful. Designer ceramic is almost a form of pride to the owner but for Koh, pottery making is an art and is also good for the mind. “Clay has a magical calming effect,” said Koh, the 47-year-old owner of Clay Expression (@clay expression_my). According to Koh, working with clay and making pottery ...

Book review: You’re In, Not Out

CELEBRATING the 10th anniversary of the Fugee school and the people behind it, this coffee table book is simple in terms of content but packs a punch emotionally. Essentially, this carefully put together book gives us a peek into the lives of refugee children who are given an education at this school, as well as a foundation for them to move on to better things. What we take for granted is appreciated by these children who would have fallen between the cracks if it wasn’t for this school, its dedicated teachers and their partners who have helped support its many activites over the years. Through photos, visual art and short essays, you will learn more about these children and the joy they find in simple things. Founded by former Miss Malaysia World and Universe Deborah Henry and Shikeen Halibullah in 2008, Fugee expanded from a small apartment unit to a double storey office space in 2015. By 2019, Fugee had educated over 500 refugee students, some who have even been offered schola...

Definitive Guide to Carb Timing and Carb Cycling

Image
The Primal Blueprint is generally considered a low-carb way of eating, especially in contrast to the Standard American Diet and the like. We’re not anti-carb. My Big-Ass Salad is a huge bowl of carbs from vegetables, after all. We’re selective about the sources of our carbs and generally mindful about how many we take in. Given that, readers always want to know the “right” way to incorporate carbs. Which carb sources? How many? When? How often? The Primal Blueprint Food Pyramid and Carb Curve provide answers to the first two questions. The latter two… well, those are more complicated. I’ve written about these topics many times, but the questions keep on coming. Today I’m going to try to condense the main points into one post. I’ll touch on some issues you’ve raised in the comments of recent posts, too. In truth, I keep getting questions because there are so few definitive answers about the optimal way to incorporate carbs in your diet. Underlying hormonal and metabolic health, act...
