Empire renewed without Smollett

Image
US TELEVISION network Fox on April 30 renewed drama series Empire for a sixth season but said there were no plans to bring back the character played by Jussie Smollett, the actor who said he was the victim of a hate crime in January. Chicago police accused Smollett of making up an attack against him, but the actor maintained his innocence and prosecutors dismissed criminal charges against him. Smollett played gay singer-songwriter Jamal Lyon on the show about a family in the hip-hop entertainment business. Fox did leave a door open to possibly bring Smollett back by extending an option on his contract. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire ,” according to a statement from 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Entertainment. Empire airs on the Fox broadcast network, a unit of Fox Corp. The series is produced by the Fox television studio, whi...

Does Red Meat Give You Colon Cancer?

Image
Have you heard? There’s a new “red meat will kill you” study. This time, it’s colorectal cancer. Here’s the press release . Here’s the full study . I covered this a couple Sundays ago in “Sunday with Sisson.” If you haven’t signed up for that, I’d recommend it . SWS is where I delve into my habits, practices, and observations, health-related and health-unrelated—stuff you won’t find on the blog. Anyway, I thought I’d expand on my response to that study here today. How the Study Was Conducted It’s the basic story you see with most of these observational studies. Around 175,000 or so people were asked to recall what they ate on a regular basis—a food frequency questionnaire. This is the exact questionnaire , in fact. The research team took the answers, measured some baseline characteristics of all the subjects—socioeconomic status, exercise levels, whether they smoked, education level, occupation, family history of colorectal cancer, and a few others—and then followed up with parti...

What Is the Optimal Vitamin D Level?

If everyone took 2,000 units of vitamin D a day, it could shift the curve from average blood levels in the mid-50s to about a 110 nmol/L, which some estimate could add years to our life expectancy. Data derived from randomized clinical trials have convinced some influential experts, such as Harvard’s Chair of Nutrition, that we should shoot for this kind of range, levels that about nine out of ten people fail to reach because it may necessitate taking 1,800 to 4,000 units of vitamin D a day. The Institute of Medicine (IOM), however, considered blood levels of 50 nmol/L to be sufficient and therefore recommended only 600 to 800 units a day for those with little or no sun exposure. Why so low? Because the IOM was only considering bone health. Even if we cared just about our bones and not our lifespan, we’d still probably want to shoot for a 75 nmol/L threshold, because there’s evidence from hundreds of autopsies of people who died in car accidents, for instance, showing osteomala...

Behind-the-scenes of The Long Night

Image
SPOILER ALERT! Following the third episode premiere of Game of Thrones Season 8 on April 29, David Benioff (Executive Producer, Writer) and D.B. Weiss (Executive Producer, Writer) break down Episode 3 in ‘Inside The Episode’ “Because it’s such a long battle, and this episode is important that we feel the ebb and flow and so there are moments when you think things are going a little bit better for the living, we felt like it was important to have that moment of hope when Mel comes in and lights up their oxen and they’ll ride off into battle.” “We knew this episode was going to be almost entirely battle and that can get really boring, really quickly. You can watch it for a certain number of minutes before the effect starts to dampen. “Part of it was making sure that we really stayed focused on the characters, and so whether it’s Arya’s storyline or Sansa, Tyrion down the Crypt or Jon Snow and Dany up in the dragons, kind of like all these separate little battles within the greater b...

Sports Illustrated will feature burkini-clad model

Image
SPORTS Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue, best known for its racy covers of scantily clad bikini models, will feature for the first time a Muslim model wearing a hijab and burkini, the magazine said on April 29. Somali-American model Halima Aden’s rookie spread will be set in Kenya, where she born in a refugee camp and lived until the age of seven. “Growing up in the States, I never really felt represented because I never could flip through a magazine and see a girl who was wearing a hijab,“ Aden said in a video tweeted by the magazine. Sports Illustrated also posted a picture of her posing lying down in shallow water, wearing a turquoise hijab, long yellow earrings and a deep blue burkini -- the full length swimsuit favored by some Muslim women. Halima, 21, made headlines at age 19 when she was the first woman to wear a hijab in the Miss Minnesota USA Pageant, where she made the semi-finals in 2016. She has previously featured on the cover of British Vogue and walked on the N...

John Singleton dead at 51

Image
JOHN Singleton, director of the groundbreaking 1991 movie about US inner city life Boyz n the Hood , died Monday at the age of 51, his family announced, triggering a flood of tributes hailing him as an “inspiration.” Singleton had been placed in a medically-induced coma after suffering a stroke several weeks ago, and his family had earlier made known their intention to take the filmmaker off life support. “John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends,“ they said in a statement quoted by media including USA Today and NBC News. “Our hearts are heavier today... as we mourn this tremendous loss,“ said Directors Guild of America director Thomas Schlamme. Singleton directed Boyz n the Hood as a 22-year-old fresh out of film school. The flick described youth and violence in South Central Los Angeles, the bleak, gang-ridden neighborhood of his childhood. The movie won Singleton Oscar nominations as best director and best original screenplay, making him the youngest...

ACTRESS Jaya Ganason had no speaking lines in her feature film debut, the 2017 release The Farm: En Veettu Thottathil . In this Malaysian Tamil-language film, directed by Karthik Shamalan, the 29-year-old plays a hearing impaired girl who is stalked throughout a dilapidated farm by a masked madman. Jaya’s performance in the film impressed both audiences and critics. Her efforts paid off when she walked away with the Best New Actress award at the 2019 Malaysia Film Festival (FFM) in March, and the Best Actress award at the 2019 Malaysian Tamil Artiste Award show in April. Not a bad achievement for the Kuala Lumpur-born lass. Did you want to be an actress when you were young? “I never dreamt of being an actress. A friend persuaded me to act in a 20-minute Tamil short film, Muthal Naal Indru , which tells the story of a young prostitute. “I was curious and decided to give it try, and [ended up winning] the Best Actress award at the 2012 BMW Shorties Short Film competition. “Then...

Home of dragon boat racing

Image
IN RECENT years, dragon boat racing has been gaining popularity worldwide as a sport. But these races have a festive significance, in the form of the Dragon Boat Festival, which is a major celebration in the Chinese lunar calendar. For a total experience combining the sport and the tradition, look no further than the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival. This annual event, organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and co-organised by the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association (HKCDBA), is taking place for the 10th time this June. The dragon boat, a long canoe carved with a decorative dragon head and tail, and painted with totems, embodies the venerable creature in Chinese mythology. HKCDBA chairman Arnold Chung Chi Lok explains: “Traditionally, dragon boats and paddles are made from teak and camphorwood, and there are three different boat sizes. Today in international races, stronger fibreglass is used, and the boat size has been standardised.” While dragon boat racing is now pr...
